black jar


now i lay me down to sleep
i pray the lord the jar won’t seep
out my nose and from my ears
and seal my eyes in thick, black tears

i’ve wrenched the lid and closed it tight
to keep the nightmares through the night
but if it leaks before i wake
i pray the lord my soul to take
